Deer Creek Speedway
Gulbrandson Tops Hobby Stock Barnburner At Deer Creek
Spring Valley, MN (July 27)
By: Todd Narveson
It was a hot and sultry night at Deer Creek Speedway for the RacinDirt.com Thunder Summer Series presented by Whitewater Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram. The show was supported by Essig Insurance Agency, Osage Co-op, Weber auto Parts and Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac.
The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds rolled out first for their 18-lap main event. Colin Wittenberg led the 19-car field to the green flag. A nine-car pileup on lap two blocked the track in turn two and brought out the yellow flag.
Wittenberg led with Jayme Hiller and Kadden Kath right on his heels. Hiller pulled side-by-side with Wittenberg on lap five and then Kath drove past Hiller for second on lap seven. Chistopher Deno used the top groove and moved to third.
Wittenberg, Kath and Deno ran three wide for the lead on lap nine while Jason Vandekamp was to fourth. Kath took the lead in turn two on the 11th circuit and Vandekamp flew to second. Vandekamp zoomed to the lead on lap 12 before the races final yellow flew on lap 14.
Vandekamp led the final four laps to score ninth win of the season. Josy Bazey made a late race charge to second after he started 11th. Joey Jensen finished in third while Deno was fourth and Kath ended up fifth.
Dustin Gulbrandson jumped from row one to lead the Meadow Greens Golf Course USRA Hobby Stock feature. A quick yellow would slow things on lap two. Gulbrandson led, but Luke Schluetter got to second and tried to close in on the leader.
The top five ran in tight formation on lap nine. Nick Schwebach moved to third on lap ten and Krysta Doughty had charged from 11th to fourth. Schwebach moved past Schluetter for second on lap 12 as Gulbrandson had moved ahead. That all changed when a yellow flew to set up a two lap shootout to the finish.
Gulbrandson led to the white flag with Schwebach, Schluetter and Doughty close behind. As they lead pack charge out of turn four to the checkered flag there was a wild scramble. Gulbrandson took the win with Schwebach and Schlueter right alongside Gulbrandson. The top three were separated by a scan .075 or a second. Doughty would finish fourth and Caden Helle would round out the top five.
Twenty-six Kid’s Dreams Come True USRA B-Mods took the green flag for their $1000 to win race. Caden Neisius would take off from row one to lead, but a couple of cautions would slow the pace. On the lap seven restart, Neisius took off and continued to lead.
Taylor Skauge held second with a flurry of action going on behind him. Gage Motl moved to third and challenged Skauge. Harley Dais worked to fourth before the yellow returned on lap 14. At that time the leader Neisius was docked two spots for starting the race before the cone in the start zone.
That moved Skauge to the lead on the restart but he would tag the wall in turn two and Neisius zoomed back to the lead. Neisius held on for his first win at Deer Creek. Dais slipped to second with Motl third. Jake Richards finished In fourth and Skauge came home fifth.
Andrew Bleess led the Rochester Chevrolet-Cadillac USRA Stock Car feature while Kyle Falck and Brayden Gjere raced for second. Falck moved to second and they ran that way until a yellow came out on lap 11.
Gjere took the lead on lap 12, and after a lap 14 caution led the rest of the way for his second straight win. Falck finished in second and Brandon Hare had a late race surge o third. Brady Williamson would finish in fourth while Bleess was fifth.
Twenty-two NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modifieds took the green for the 25-lap, $2000 to win race. Parker Hale led until lap seven when Joe Chisholm slid to the lead in turn four. Hale tried to cross him back over, but the yellow came out soon after.
Jim Chisholm shot to second on the start, but another caution slowed the race on lap 4. The race had a hard time with no flow due to yellow flags. After a lap 11 restart, Joe Chisholm took off to early and would be docked two spots at the next yellow or race end which is the track rule.
The race lead was now between Jim Chisholm and Brandon Davis. They put on a show, but another yellow came out on lap 23. Joe Chisholm was then docked the two spots for the restart. Jim Chisholm led the final two laps for the win while Joe Chisholm got back to second. Davis was third while Keith Foss and Hale rounded out the top five.
