Foss & Hofer Score First Wins At The Creek

Spring Valley, MN (August 26) – By: Todd Narveson

The ongoing theme for 2017 is Mother Nature trying to spoil race night at Deer Creek Speedway. It was up in the air until mid-afternoon if racing would take place this week. The rain threat abated for a bit and the show was on. A brief shower halted the show during the USRA B-Mod heat races, but the show was completed.

Season championships were on the line this week, but most of the drama was already over in most of the divisions. This week’s program was presented by Clements Chevrolet, Ranfy & Sandy Norby, B&K Millright, Adams Graphix and Wagner Trucking.

The National Fleet Graphics WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds tackled the fast track first for their 18-lap main event. Michael hofer would jump off of row one to take the early lead. Garitt Wytaske, Don Schaefer and Casey Trom battled for third.

Wytaske moved to second and Steven Amundson got to third and Robbie Franklin cracked the top five. Hofer still led while Amundson got to second on lap three. Wytaske dogged Amundson for second while Hofer sped away. A caution on lap 11 eliminated the big lead Hofer had built up.

Hofer pulled away on the start and Ryan Wetzstein went to the top of the track and was up to fifth. The red flag came out on lap 14 when Karlie Wagner rolled her car in turn one. Wagner walked away from the roll-over without injury.

Hofer again drove away on the start and Franklin, Amundson and Wytaske were three wide for second. Amundson held second but spun when the white flag came out to bring out the caution.

Hofer who had been out of a race car for six seasons won for the first time since August 14, 2010 in his third night out. Franklin who won his second straight track championship was second. Wytaske finished in third while Wetzstein was fourth and Ryan Goergen placed fifth.

The Adams Graphix WISSOTA Street Stocks had another hum dinger of a main event. Jason Newkirk and Noah Grinstead went side-by-side for the lead when Grinstead took over on lap three. The race was furious behind the leaders with Braden Brauer, Danny Richards and Mike Blowers in tight formation.

Brauer and Newkirk then were door-to-door for second with Richards close. Richards slipped past Brauer and then darted low on Newkirk and nabbed second. Grinstead led on lap 13 but Richards was right on him when Grinstead’s torque converter broke, erupted in smoke and caused him to spin.

Richards took over from there for his third win of the season. Brauer got past Newkirk on lap 14 for second. Newkirk held off Mike Blowers for third and Zach Elward was fifth. Mike Blowers took home his sixth straight Street Stock track championship.

Jim Chisholm did what he had to do but it still was not quite enough to win the Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mod track championship. Chisholm pulled off of row one and led every lap of the 18-lap feature for his third win of the season. But Dustin Kruse’s third place finish earned himself enough points to claim the title.

Chisholm dominated the race and was never seriously challenged. The race for second was good with Alex Williamson, Parker Hale and Brian Mahlstedt. Kruse got into the top five on lap seven and then was fourth on lap 10. Kruse then passed Williamson on lap 14 for third.

Chisholm got his third win of the season with Hale a strong second. Kruse was third while J.T. Wasmund finished in the fourth spot. Kadden Kath would finish in the fifth spot at the checkered flag.

Brandon Duellman led the Brauer Roofing WISSOTA Super Stock feature until a caution on lap nine brought the pack back to him. Jeff Brauer then challenged on lap 10 and took the lead for good on lap 11.

Brauer led the last nine laps for his seventh win of the year. Duellman had a solid run in second and Tommy Richards was third. Richards was also crowned the track champion for 2017. A.J. Hoff finished in the fourth spot and Neil Eckhart was fifth.

Tony Schill started on the pole of the Napa Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature and led in turn one. Keith Foss planted himself high on the cushion and blasted by for the lead in turn two. Tammy Soma-Clark and Brian Shaw crashed on lap two that resulted in Clark rolling over to bring out the red flag.

Foss took off on the green while Schill pounded the wall and slowed. Josh Angst got to second with Lucas Schott third. Dustin Sorensen was on the charge from 14th and was fourth. Sorensen slipped past Schott for third on lap five.

Foss checked out and was a straightaway ahead of the rest of the pack. Jason Cummins moved to fifth and raced Schott for fourth. Sorensen caught and passed Angst for second on lap 12 and then Cummins was right with Angst for third.

Foss dominated the race for his first win this season. Sorensen’s run ended in second with Angst third. Cummins wound up fourth and won the track title and Schott rounded out the top five.
